I'm sponsoring a kit in honor of someone. How do I let him or her know?
You will receive a recognition card in the mail that you may pass on to the kit's honoree (or the honoree's family, if appropriate). We'd love for your kit's honoree to know about this special gift.
I'd like to donate a kit but I don't have a family connection to World War II. Can I simply donate a kit to my neighborhood school?
Of course! Do Your Part School Kits make great gifts for teachers and are a wonderful way for you to support literacy and history education in your community. Your gift to your neighborhood school will be greatly appreciated by students, parents and teachers alike.
I'd like to submit a photo of the person I am honoring with my sponsorship. May I send one?
Yes! When you complete the order form for your Do Your Part School Kit, fill out the box that asks you to tell us about your honoree's role in World War II. Then, after you've submitted your order, send us an e-mail with your photo attached. We'll post both the text and the photo you've submitted on this website, and we'll also make a flyer with the text and the photo to include with the kit you've sponsored. When the teacher opens the kit, she'll read the information about your honoree aloud to the kids and post the flyer in the classroom. It's so meaningful to connect the World War II generation with today's children in this way!
I would like to sponsor a kit containing a specific book. How do I let you know about my request?
Right now we have three Home-Front Heroes titles-Doing My Part, The No-No Boys and V for Victory. We'll soon have a fourth! Please complete the Do Your Part School Kits order form on the website, then send us an e-mail telling us your name and which book you would prefer to sponsor. If you don't have a preference, you don't need to choose a specific book. Instead, we'll fulfill teachers' requests based on their preferences.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
We are not a 501 (c) (3), but you can claim your school kit as a non-cash donation on your tax return. In the thank you letter we send to you following your purchase, we will include a "Request for Receipt" form that you can send to the school that received your kit. The address for the school will also be on your "Request for Receipt" form. You can then contact your school asking that they send you a receipt for your donation. Most schools will quickly return your receipt, but if you don't receive your receipt in a timely manner, we suggest that you follow through.
I'm a teacher who would like a kit for my classroom. Do I have to come up with funding for my kit?
No! We will make a concerted effort to find sponsors for your kit. You don't have to do anything except receive the kit and use it as you see fit in your classroom. If, however, you think you know someone who would be interested in becoming a Do Your Part School Kit sponsor-or you think your PTA might be interested, please do tell them to visit this website! If you can help just by spreading the word, we can reach many more kids! And don't forget to tell your fellow teachers to sign up for a kit, too.
I'm sponsoring a kit. How do I know when and where my kit was delivered?
After your kit has been delivered, you will receive a thank you note from us that tells you which school and classroom received your kit. Also look for a thank you from the teacher and kids!
The lesson plans and teaching materials that come with the kits are excellent. How did you put them together?
Thank you for the compliment. We've been hearing great feedback on our school kit materials. We worked with half a dozen teachers over a five-month period to ensure that we were more than adequately meeting teachers' needs and providing something special. Loretta Madden, a retired teacher from Fort Collins, wrote the lesson plans and put together the student activities that you like so well. She was an elementary and middle-level teacher and coordinator of the sixth grade International Baccalaureate program for Poudre School District. We were lucky to find someone as talented as Loretta to help us with our materials.
